ChatGPT Credited as Author on Amazon Kindle

The generative AI bot ChatGPT from OpenAI is now recognized on Amazon's Kindle store as the author or co-author of more than 200 e-books.

According to a Reuters article, that figure may be much higher because Amazon doesn't expressly demand that authors disclose the use of AI.

The Wise Little Squirrel: A Story of Saving and Investing is a 30-page illustrated children's e-book by Brett Schickler, a salesperson in Rochester, New York, using ChatGPT.

Finally, a book looked to be within reach, according to Schickler. I told myself, "I can do this."

Sammy the Squirrel, who teaches readers how to save money, appears in his book in a primitive rendering ironically created by AI.

Schickler remarked, "I could see individuals creating an entire career out of this.

Using questions from ChatGPT, such as "write a tale about a parent educating his son about financial literacy," he came up with the book.

The Author's Guild is not enthused about these developments.

The Author's Guild executive director Mary Rasenberger told Reuters, "This is something we need to be worried about."

According to Rasenberger, "these books will swamp the market, and many authors will be out of a job."

Rasenberger continued, "There needs to be openness from the platforms and the authors about how these books are produced, or you're going to have a lot of low-quality publications."

Since its debut, ChatGPT has caused controversy among fans and caused some to fear for their careers.

A spokesman for Amazon, Lindsay Hamilton, responded when contacted for comment, saying, "All books in the shop must adhere to our content rules, including by complying with intellectual property rights and any other applicable laws." However, Hamilton did not expressly state if Amazon forced authors to declare their use of AI.
